Our Students
We aim to open doors to STEM opportunities for all students with high interest and high potential in math and science but little access to advanced mathematical study.
Students must be from lower-income families to attend. Additionally, we consider the resources available at their schools.
We reach broadly when we admit students, because we believe that every student should be able to access deep STEM learning (not just those already connected to opportunities).
Our students come from:
Los Angeles:
Koreatown, Pico-Union, Boyle Heights, South LA
New York:
Across the boroughs
Entry Points:
NY, CA, UT, TN, NM
We serve exactly those students who would otherwise be unlikely or unable to access STEM opportunities. This includes students who are Black, Latine, Indigenous; students from low-income families; first-generation college goers; and those not already tapped into academic enrichment.
Here is a snapshot of the most recent cohort of students admitted to our Pathway Program:
81.1% come from racial or ethnic groups that have been historically excluded from STEM (Black, Hispanic/Latine, and Indigenous people).
Median family income is $43,000.
64% will be the first in their families to graduate from college.
51% are boys, 49% are girls.
We make a special effort to admit without screening for family involvement; we want to find those students who are not otherwise “plugged in” to such opportunities. Thus, we reach students directly in their schools to make sure that they can apply.
To encourage families to enroll their children in our programs, we hold family lunches to help them get to know the program, and we do personalized outreach to admitted families to encourage attendance at our programs.
BEAM’s programs are free to students and families.
