BEAM Discovery

RISING 7TH GRADERS

Discovery is an intense and joyful 5-week summer program.

Discovery serves about 350 students each summer in New York City and Los Angeles.

Students do 90 hours of math. Students connect to math through puzzles and games that center on problem solving and logical reasoning.

We center student choice. Students choose their own classes (such as Truth, Lies, and Logic; Cryptarithms; Game Theory; and Voting Theory), solve math puzzles on teams as part of relays, and work together to solve 100 challenging problems (and win a prize for everyone).

Community is essential. Students create a close-knit community of kids who love math and build the confidence and self-identity for success.

We have fun! Field trips, such as renting out a movie theater, and activities, like soccer, origami, Rubik’s cubes, and board games, add a sense of specialness to the summer.

Students grow as doers of math. Discovery students consistently grow in problem solving, persistence at difficult math problems, and love of math. Many students tell us it is the first time they’ve been challenged in math. Take a deep dive into our impact.

Faculty consist of professors, teachers, graduate students, and STEM professionals. Counselors, primarily undergraduate STEM majors, serve as teaching assistants and lead activities. Work at a BEAM summer camp.
